Estimating Costs for a Workshop
Would you like us to put on a workshop for you, but are concerned about what it would cost? Use this page to help you estimate the costs--but be sure to contact us and talk with us about them if you are concerned they don't work for your group. We have done workshops with groups as small as 12 and as large as 75. We customize all of our workshops, and that includes the costs.
This gives you costs for a one-day or two-day workshop, on a weekend. We assume a standard topic (one of the ones listed on our site), with standard preparations and handouts, not including individual manuscript feedback. We can include that or can develop other topics, for a reasonable additional cost. Please let us know if you have questions.
Costs: We adjust our workshop fee depending on the size of the group, as follows: Our base fee is $500 per workshop day for one of us, or $750 for both of us, for a group of up to 10 people. For each additional participant, add $50 (per day). We also expect to be reimbursed for travel expenses at 50/cents mile if we drive, or actual travel and hotel costs. For travel that takes us away from home overnight, we add $250 for each of us, per night, to the fee.
Examples: For a trip made by one of us to a group of 8 50 miles from our home, the total cost to you would be as follows: $500 + (100 x .50) = $550. For a trip made by both of us to a group of 20 in a city to which we had to travel by air at $200 RT each, with one overnight, in a hotel with rooms costing $100 each, the total cost to you would be as follows: $750 + (10 x $50) + (2 x $250) + ($2 x $200) + (2 x $100) = $2350. You can estimate the costs in a similar manner for a two-day workshop.
What this means in practice is that for a small group within a reasonable drive, having one of us come will be affordable; a larger group that needs to have both of us come could afford it; if significant travel is involved, then one of us coming will help to contain costs.
