Our Backgrounds

A photo of Emma DrydenEmma D. Dryden is a veteran children's book editor who's edited over 1,000 children's books during twenty years in various editorial and publisher positions at Random House Children's Books, McElderry Books, and Atheneum Books for Young Readers. She founded the highly esteemed children's editorial and publishing consultancy firm drydenbks LLC, through which she assists and supports writers and illustrators at all stages of their careers. She is on the Advisory Council of the Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators and is a sought-after speaker at regional and local conferences and workshops around the world.

A photo of Eileen RobinsonEileen Robinson is a children's book editor who began her career at Scholastic and Harcourt, acquiring, developing, editing, and mentoring new and established writers. She then moved on to help build an imprint at Reycraft Books and own her publishing company, Move Books--to get more boys to read. Move Books was bought in 2022 by Charlesbridge Publishing, becoming Charlesbridge Moves--a middle-grade imprint for reluctant readers. Believing in the power of perspective, Eileen has helped many new writers get their foot in the door of an industry that is very subjective, but has its heart in the right place, aiming to give children the literacy, the stories, they need to be able to choose for themselves, think critically, and most of all, BE themselves.

A photo of Harold Underdown Harold Underdown most recently worked in-house as executive editor at Kane Press. He has also worked at Macmillan, Orchard, and Charlesbridge, and has experience in trade and educational publishing. Harold enjoys teaching, and in that role wrote The Complete Idiot's Guide to Children's Book Publishing, now in its third edition. He founded and runs The Purple Crayon, a respected web site with information about the children's publishing world. He speaks and gives workshops via Boyds Mills (formerly the Highlights Foundation) and the SCBWI, and consults with individual creators on manuscripts and strategy.
